October marks breast cancer awareness month. As more and more attention is devoted to the importance of early detection, our patients at Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery are increasingly inquiring as to what effect breast augmentation has on breast cancer detection. While smart to be concerned, there is little evidence to suggest that breast augmentation and implants hinders the detection of breast cancer. That said, it is wise to understand how detection differs with implants.

Get to Know Your New Breasts

To aid in early detection, the American Cancer Society recommends that all women perform monthly self-breast exams. After breast augmentation, your breasts will have a beautiful new appearance and feel. For this reason, it is important to familiarize yourself with your new breasts—it may take a while for you to adjust to the new texture, folds, and dimples. As you become more comfortable with your breasts, you will be able to notice subtle changes.

FYI: Our highly trained team of surgeons and staff can help you with techniques to best self-examine your breasts in regards to your augmentation.

Be Forth Coming About Your Augmentation

Be honest and open about your breast augmentation. Always remind your doctor, radiologist, or any other health care specialist that you have undergone augmentation. Also, knowing information like the manufacture, design, style, and volume can help your doctor determine if there are any unusual changes.

Make Mammograms Routine

After the age of 40, yearly mammograms are essential for all women. Breast implants can slightly hinder the clarity of the mammogram image as both saline and silicone implants are somewhat opaque and can appear as white splotches on the image.

FYI: If you know you are at high risk for breast cancer or are particularly concerned, have the implant placed under the pectoral muscle. This allows for the implant to be further away from the breast gland and is less likely to obscure the mammogram image.

To improve the image’s clarity, your radiologist or technician may choose to capture additional views of your breast. By pushing the implant back against the chest wall, a technique known as “implant displacement views”, helps to bring breast tissue forward. Using this method, the view of the breast is improved in as many as 92% of patients.

We understand that choosing to have breast augmentation is lifelong decision. We are here to support you in your decision. During your initial consultation, we are happy to address any concerns and answer any questions you may have about breast augmentation and how it relates to breast cancer and early detection. Please contact Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery to learn more.

In its essence, balance is the arrangement of elements so that no one part overpowers another. In this, balance is key to a beautiful and visually appealing. The chin plays a surprisingly large part in the harmony of our facial features.

At Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery, we understand the importance of a well-defined and harmonious chin. With the help of chin implants, our team of highly experienced doctors will create a proportionate and prominent chin. By enhancing or augmenting your natural physical structure, chin implants are an excellent way to shape and sculpt your chin—renewing and creating balance between your facial features.

Predetermined by genetics, we have no control over our facial structure. What’s more, as we age, our facial structure and shape changes. Unfortunately, over time, even the most defined chins loose definition—both skin laxity and weight gain being common culprits. Bone loss is also inevitable as one ages.

Aesthetically, an ideal chin is oval in shape,

extending directly from under the lower lip’s projection.

Is your chin proportionate? You can easily measure the projection of your chin: drawing a vertical line from the center of your lower lip down towards your chin, your chin should touch or come close to touching the line. For women, the chin is often a few millimeters behind the line, whereas for men, the chin can extend a millimeter or two past the vertical line. For both sexes, a weak chin is characterized by being recessed or, significantly short of reaching the vertical line you just imagined.

Bringing balance to all facial features, your chin has an astounding effect on the perceived balance of your face. As the chin, nose, and lips are close together, correcting one can help correct them all. Often, patients are surprised to learn that they can better benefit from chin implants than they could a nose job (rhinoplasty). A properly proportionate and even chin can make your nose appear smaller or larger and better placed in relation to your facial balance. Likewise, as the chin and lips are placed closely together, correcting the chin can actually make your lips look better. An unbalanced chin can even make your neck appear larger.

As a relatively minor procedure, implants are placed over the bone through a small incision. To ensure discretion, we are able to avoid visible scarring by placing the incision discreetly under the chin. Implants are shaped and fit prior to insertion. An outpatient procedure, most patients find that they can return to work and other activities within a week of surgery.

Your chin plays an important part in your overall aesthetic beauty. Whether your chin is naturally weak or weak has lost definition over the years—chin implants can help shape and contour your overall facial structure. Interested? Schedule a consultation at Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery to learn how chin implants can renew and strengthen your look.

If you are ready for a cosmetic makeover and have always been self-conscious about your nose, talk to us about the benefits of nose surgery. Nose reshaping surgery, otherwise known as rhinoplasty, can transform your look even with a subtle modification. We can reshape and resize the nose to restore facial symmetry and give you a more attractive facial profile. If you want to look and feel your best, consider the benefits of rhinoplasty to achieve a more harmonious facial appearance.

Key Reasons to Consider Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is still the second-most popular plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States. If you have always been self-conscious about the look of your nose and are ready to make a positive change in your life, undergoing nose surgery may be right for you. The perfectly-sculpted nose can balance out your facial features and help you to feel more self-confident.

You might consider rhinoplasty if you are bothered by any of the following:

  • Droopy tip
  • Crooked nose
  • Crooked bridge
  • Large bump along the nose
  • Excessively large or small nose or bridge
  • Hooked or upturned nose
  • Asymmetrical nose shape
  • Obstructed airways

Some patients undergo rhinoplasty to improve breathing and restore healthy sleep. Others want nose surgery in Costa Mesa simply for cosmetic reasons. Whatever the case may be for you, we are here to make sure you undergo a customized procedure that will enhance your look for life.

What to Expect with Nose Surgery in Costa Mesa

Your rhinoplasty procedure is customized for your unique goals and we will make sure you have a realistic idea of what to expect from the procedure. Looking at rhinoplasty before and after photos can give you a fair idea of what types of results are possible with our nose reshaping techniques. We perform this procedure under general anesthesia and will work to reshape the bone and cartilage so we can achieve your ideal result. You will need to take up to two weeks off work after surgery because there will be significant bruising and swelling.

If you have low self-esteem or low self-confidence because of the look of your nose, you may be a great candidate for rhinoplasty in Costa Mesa. Schedule your Costa Mesa nose surgery consultation at Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery today!

Lose the Lines and Wrinkles with Botox
If you’re noticing more wrinkles and lines developing around the eyes, brows or forehead, consider the benefits of non-surgical rejuvenation treatments like Botox. Botox Cosmetic continues to be the most popular injectable for treating frown lines and crow’s feet. It can make a dramatic difference in your appearance and many patients find that they can maintain a fresh, youthful look for several months. If you are ready for a quick easy way to erase fine lines and wrinkles this summer, consider the benefits of Botox as part of your rejuvenation plan.

Treating Lines and Wrinkles with Botox

Some of the most obvious signs of aging appear around the forehead and eyes. If you want to smooth some of those telltale signs of aging without surgery, Botox will work to relax the facial muscles so that surface lines and wrinkles simply fade or disappear entirely. Relaxing these muscles can also prevent new lines from forming over time, making Botox an attractive option for anyone who wants to preserve their youthful look. Pairing Botox with a dermal filler such as Juvederm can provide even more of a rejuvenated look.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox?

You may be the perfect candidate for Botox if you are concerned about superficial lines and deeper wrinkles running along the forehead. We can treat everything from crow’s feet to nasolabial folds with Botox Cosmetic. You may be a good candidate for Botox if you are concerned about:

  • Deep lines along the forehead
  • Vertical lines between the brows (known as the “11”s)
  • Fine lines around the outer corners of the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Other areas can be treated. Talk to your provider about what other areas they may or may not treat and why.

The treatment itself can be administered quickly and you will notice a significant improvement in the treatment areas from a few days to a week or two. Results typically last about three months or longer.  We can also make corrections along the way if needed.

Learn more about the benefits of Botox in Costa Mesa by scheduling your consultation with one of the plastic surgeons at Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery today.

Exfoliation Treatments to Reduce Summer Sun Damage
With summer in full force, keeping your skin hydrated and pigment free may come as a challenge.  Now is a good time to start planning your treatment schedule to help undue some of the sun damage created while enjoying summer fun. Just adding a professional exfoliation treatment or two can reveal better hydrated skin while sloughing off excessive pigmentation (think unwanted freckles or age spots). Exfoliation can also help any lingering acne related discoloration as well.  Let the doctors at Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery help you discover what exfoliation treatment will best suit your skin type and condition.

In terms of exfoliation, there are both chemical and non-chemical treatments available such as peels or micro-resurfacing such as the device we prefer called DermaSweep.   The great news is they both provide similar outcomes, are relatively quick with minimal to no downtime. You provider will evaluate your skin type and make appropriate recommendations.

Some of the benefits you can expect from advanced exfoliation:

  • Removes dry surface layer to reveal more radiant skin tone
  • Lightens excessive hyperpigmentation (usually takes multiple treatments)
  • Softens Lines and Wrinkles
  • Better skin hydration
  • Overall younger looking skin

How do these treatments work?

These treatments eliminate the buildup of dead skin cells that add to making lines, wrinkles and dry skin look worse.  Chemical peels can go “deeper” into the skin depending on the peel solution used, they range from more surface to very penetrating such as a TCA peel. Derma Sweep mechanically removes dead skin cells by means of their patient pending bristle tip and the added benefits of increasing circulation. While a chemical peel usually finishes with a simple barrier protection product, DermaSweep concludes the treatment with customized infusion solutions. They both stimulate your skin to turn over more effectively as well. Each treatment is targeting a specific skin type and condition which is why it’s so useful to have choices.  Whatever treatment modality your provider selects for you, regular treatments with the appropriate home care can significantly reduce sun damage.  The other great benefit is that most of these treatments can treat the neck, chest, and hands.

What can you expect?

Either treatment choice takes 30 minutes or less to perform. A temporary tingling sensation is normal with chemical peel. Chemical peels usually have a few days of peeling or “social downtime” associated with them. The results however are well worth a few days of peeling. Microdermabrasion has little to no downtime so for some this can be more of an advantage.  After care will be explained prior to your treatment and good hydration along with SPF is a must.

To learn how either a chemical peel or microdermabrasion can rejuvenate your skin, Schedule a consultation with one of Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery’s physicians today.

3 Body Contouring Procedures that Can Enhance Your Figure
If you are tired of struggling to change your body with diet and exercise and are looking for more of a transformation this year, talk to the plastic surgeons at Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery about body contouring procedures that can reshape and enhance your figure. We perform several targeted procedures that can tighten loose skin, get rid of excess fat, and create a more proportionate figure. We understand the struggles many women and men have when it comes to improving their appearance. To achieve your best results, we’ll customize your procedure to target the specific areas you want to improve upon, and will help you achieve your ideal body shape.

These three body contouring procedures can enhance your figure:

Breast Lift

Women who have sagging breasts, but are happy with their cup size, can enhance their feminine silhouette with a breast lift. A breast lift is ideal for women who have sagging or drooping breasts after pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or simply because of genetics or aging. We can reposition the breasts and tighten up the skin to restore your youthful, perkier appearance. All of this can be achieved without inserting breast implants. If you are interested in increasing the size of your breasts, we can perform this procedure in conjunction with breast augmentation surgery.

Tummy Tuck

If you have loose skin around the midsection or are self-conscious about a protruding stomach, talk to us about tummy tuck surgery. A tummy tuck will get rid of excess skin around the midsection and can also tighten up the abdominal muscles. If you aren’t able to tighten up your midsection with your own efforts, tummy tuck surgery may be the most effective way to enhance your figure and achieve the flat and toned stomach you’ve always wanted. We can customize this surgery to ensure we target all of your concerns.

Thigh Lift

If you have developed loose or sagging skin around the outer thighs or below the buttocks, you may be a good candidate for a thigh lift. This is another procedure that removes excess skin and tightens up the target area to create a well-contoured appearance. We can perform the thigh lift as part of a full body lift to help you achieve your ideal figure.

Learn more about plastic surgery procedures that can enhance your figure by scheduling your body contouring consultation at Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery today.

Costa Mesa Facial Fillers
Are you starting to feel self-conscious about lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin? These are all a few common signs of aging and can be very difficult to conceal with makeup. If you want to look and feel your best this season, talk to us about non-surgical facial fillers that can plump up the skin and erase those telltale signs of aging. We can put together a custom treatment plan that will restore volume to certain parts of the face and restore your fresh-faced appearance. Most patients see results instantly, and the effects of these fillers can last several months.

Juvéderm to Treat Lines and Wrinkles

Juvéderm is still one of the most popular wrinkle fillers on the market because it produces very natural-looking results and is also very versatile. It is made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance in the body that helps the skin maintain a soft, hydrated, and supple appearance. This injectable filler can make you look years younger by filling out fine lines, minor folds, and sunken facial contours. We can also administer it in the tear troughs to eliminate hollowness under the eyes. If you are concerned about thinning lips, consider getting Juvéderm as part of a non-surgical lip augmentation procedure.

Juvéderm Voluma is a newer filler on the market and it is very effective for restoring lost volume in the cheeks. If you have developed a gaunt appearance after weight loss or as a side effect of the aging process, Juvéderm Voluma can plump up the cheek area to restore your youthful facial contours.

Restylane Restores the Effects of Aging

Many patients notice significant volume loss as they get older and lax skin can make lines, wrinkles, and folds more pronounced. Restylane is another popular facial filler for treating moderate to severe signs of aging. We can use it to correct wrinkles and lines, fill out the folds, and also to plump up the lips. If you are concerned about any of these effects of aging, talk to us about adding Restylane to your facial rejuvenation treatment plan.

We can help you feel beautiful and more confident about your appearance with facial fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane. Schedule your facial fillers consultation at Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery today!

LA Breast Lift
If you feel self-conscious when wearing tight-fitting clothing or a swimsuit because of sagging breasts, talk to us about the benefits of breast lift surgery. The breast lift is a very effective corrective procedure that can enhance your silhouette and give you a younger, more feminine look. Women who have had multiple children, or those who have undergone significant weight fluctuations, can benefit from this procedure and maintain a more youthful silhouette. We can perform a breast lift in conjunction with breast implants for even better results.

What Can a Breast Lift Do for Me?

If you have larger breasts and they are starting to sag, it can be very difficult for you to maintain good posture or feel good about your body when wearing tight-fitting clothing. Many women have to resort to supportive undergarments and specialty bras to achieve the look they want, but excessive skin laxity and lack of firmness of the tissues can make this a challenge. The breast lift can make your breasts appear perkier and more youthful by repositioning the tissues to a more attractive position. We can enhance your breasts with silicone or saline implants to create your ideal look.

Best Candidates for a Breast Lift

You may be a good candidate for an LA breast lift if any of the following apply to you:

  • Pregnancy has left you with sagging and drooping breasts
  • You have downward-pointing nipples
  • You have gained and lost a significant amount of weight over your lifetime
  • You are experiencing severe side effects of the aging process, including sagging skin
  • You have lost a lot of body fat and are left with loose skin
  • Your nipples are starting to hang below the crease of the breast tissue

As long as you do not plan to have any more children and are relatively healthy, you may be a good candidate for LA breast lift surgery. Performing this procedure with breast implants means you can have larger breasts and maintain a more feminine silhouette for years to come. We will have a chance to learn more about your goals during your consultation and determine whether you are a candidate for a breast enhancement procedure.
