With summer in full force, keeping your skin hydrated and pigment free may come as a challenge. Now is a good time to start planning your treatment schedule to help undue some of the sun damage created while enjoying summer fun. Just adding a professional exfoliation treatment or two can reveal better hydrated skin while sloughing off excessive pigmentation (think unwanted freckles or age spots). Exfoliation can also help any lingering acne related discoloration as well. Let the doctors at Pacific Coast Plastic Surgery help you discover what exfoliation treatment will best suit your skin type and condition.
In terms of exfoliation, there are both chemical and non-chemical treatments available such as peels or micro-resurfacing such as the device we prefer called DermaSweep. The great news is they both provide similar outcomes, are relatively quick with minimal to no downtime. You provider will evaluate your skin type and make appropriate recommendations.
Some of the benefits you can expect from advanced exfoliation:
- Removes dry surface layer to reveal more radiant skin tone
- Lightens excessive hyperpigmentation (usually takes multiple treatments)
- Softens Lines and Wrinkles
- Better skin hydration
- Overall younger looking skin
How do these treatments work?
These treatments eliminate the buildup of dead skin cells that add to making lines, wrinkles and dry skin look worse. Chemical peels can go “deeper” into the skin depending on the peel solution used, they range from more surface to very penetrating such as a TCA peel. Derma Sweep mechanically removes dead skin cells by means of their patient pending bristle tip and the added benefits of increasing circulation. While a chemical peel usually finishes with a simple barrier protection product, DermaSweep concludes the treatment with customized infusion solutions. They both stimulate your skin to turn over more effectively as well. Each treatment is targeting a specific skin type and condition which is why it’s so useful to have choices. Whatever treatment modality your provider selects for you, regular treatments with the appropriate home care can significantly reduce sun damage. The other great benefit is that most of these treatments can treat the neck, chest, and hands.
What can you expect?
Either treatment choice takes 30 minutes or less to perform. A temporary tingling sensation is normal with chemical peel. Chemical peels usually have a few days of peeling or “social downtime” associated with them. The results however are well worth a few days of peeling. Microdermabrasion has little to no downtime so for some this can be more of an advantage. After care will be explained prior to your treatment and good hydration along with SPF is a must.
